WHITE TRAIN
1 document with 8 pages

project date: 2008 | by susan jurasz

At the height of the Cold War, hundreds of nuclear weapons were transported in armored rail cars, called the White Trains, from the Pantex Plant to weapons storage areas around the nation. That work sustained the country's nuclear stockpiles from 1951 to 1987 against the threat of a Soviet military attack, a fear which permeated American culture at that time. Each train was allowed to travel up to 35 mph with trips lasting up to 90 days to complete. Between the armored cars were living quarters and observation decks for the personnel that traveled with the valuable merchandise.

Sea Reach was contracted in 2008 to write, design, and fabricate exhibits to interpret the white train.
